Caves of Faribault

Client: Heavy Table & Caves of Faribault Dairy
Details: I have worked with the Caves of Faribault folks before, documenting their caves and their amazing cheese. For this project I took stills in support of a video for Heavy Table.
Goals: I wanted to create a portrait of the two cheesemakers in one of the caves in a sufficient size for large print use. The Caves of Faribault are dark, damp, and narrow, making them a challenge to light and photograph, so I created this image by stitching together 49 images, making the final file approx 10,000px square. The top image is the final photo, followed by a detail of the cheesemakers (one if the images used to make the panorama)

Cinemagraphs – Peace Coffee in motion

Client: A series of cinemagraphs with Peace Coffee for Heavy Table.
Details: I had to find movements which could be cyclical – so as to combine them into one repeating loop on location at Peace Coffee roastery & Peace Coffee cafe. Below are a series of cinemagraphs (short loops of images) and a selection of the frames that they are made from.
Goals: Create a series of images to combine into cinemagraphs. Depict elements of roasting and serving coffee and give visual access to parts of the process that are inaccessible to public.

But their wedding was not about the periodic table (settings) or their science-themed quiz: it was about Jessica & Mike- sharing their families, and their passions, and their jokes. Congratulations on the beginning of something great.

Colorful headshots for Amy

This shot is my favorite from my session with Amy – the color and clarity are great for online use, but it stays interesting at larger sizes because of the changing focal plane. I “free lensed” to get the shifting focus effect (basically, holding the lens away from the camera at an angle and focusing manually).

It is a technique, in my opinion, with a very low hit rate – you just don’t get many photos that work compared to the number that are just blurry, or plain weird. But most interesting photos are the cumulative effect of low hit rates. To put it another way, with great risk comes great reward.

Mason Jar chic – tater tot hot dish

I feel pretty conflicted about photoshoots – they can create unrealistic expectations as they create details or scenarios that are impossible to recreate during the hustle of a wedding day. And they are rarely focused on the authentic wedding experience – the couple, their families, their laughter and joy.

But the reason I participate in styled shoots is my love of the midwest.

I have a love affair with Minnesota (and Wisconsin) that I want to show off. I love barns, and our summer storms, and small towns with pies & cornish pastys. And I really love Minneapolis and our food culture – close to farm country, cheese, beer & sausage.

Most wedding magazines show off sun-drenched goodness covered in lacy details.

Which is beatiful.

But it is not midwestern beautiful.

This tater tot hot dish in a mason jar was created for a photoshoot for Hearten Magazine (more photos coming this week) for the Independent Wedding Association.
