Sometimes friendships just sneak up on you: I can’t really place when I became friends with Ian & Liza, but over the years of high school, summer camp, and then as adults, we just sort of fell into a comfortable friendship that I have grown to put the highest value on. I was honored when they asked me to photograph their wedding in Madison, but I also knew that a challenge was upon me: Ian doesn’t smile. Luckily for me (and for Ian) it turns out that when you marry your best friend, you are pretty happy, so he and Liza were all smiles all day, surrounded by an abundance of friends and family to celebrate with. Thanks for so many years of friendship, and I am so happy to see two good friends so happy together.

Adrianne & Ian have been through a great deal in their years together, and they brought a joyous sense of triumph to their heartfelt summer wedding. Ian’s laughter was infections, and Adrianne was perhaps the happiest bride the world has known. They were surrounded by many people who love them and a gorgeous setting, and they deserved nothing less! Plus, there were Chinese Lion Dancers at the reception, just in case there was anyone without the proper sense of celebration already.

This series of photos just touches my heart every time I look through them. A “first look” or a “first viewing” is something I set up so that the bride and groom can see each other and spend a few minutes away from everyone else before we start the formal photography, and it can clearly be an emotional time. I just love that Ian and Adrianne wear their hearts on their sleeves, and I can’t wait to post the rest of the images from their wedding.

Kayla & Robert’s wedding was gorgeous – from the beautiful St Bernard’s Catholic Church in Middleton to multitude of orchids everywhere to the sunset over the lake at Black Hawk Country Club, it was clear how much effort Kayla and her family put into the planning! Congratulations, Kayla and Robert, on your new life together!

I didn’t get the chance to meet Katrina & Nathan until I arrived to photograph their wedding. They live in London, and their friends and family traveled from all over to celebrate with them. Most of Nathan’s groomsmen are from Australia: I had an inking before that Australians might be quick with a joke and prone to a little blue humor, and they certainly kept me on my toes, which made for lots of great photo opportunities with such a lively crowd! The night ended with the most rousing performance of “waltzing Matilda” sung by several of groomsmen.

I feel so lucky to know Ian and Liza, and even luckier to have photographed their wedding on such a beautiful day in Madison.

Kate & Chris should be enjoying Europe while I post this, but I couldn’t wait to preview their wedding at Macalester College in St Paul during a (slightly) rainy day!

I don’t have anything I can say about Adrianne & Ian’s wedding that they don’t say in every photo. They were so excited to be married and they shared that excitement with everyone. I am so very happy that you two are starting this new chapter of your lives together!
