Varsity theater wedding Minneapolis reception {favorites}

  • March 5, 2010 8:00 am

When I talk with bride’s and groom’s about their wedding details, one concern that comes up frequently is lighting – will it be too dark, will you see the ambiance, will it seem natural, can you hide the flaws?

A professional wedding photographer has already thought about those things, and has a game plan. A good professional photographer is also totally willing to abandon that game plan when the time is right. For most of this wedding at the stunning Varsity Theater in Dinkytown Minneapolis, I had two lights on stands around the room to add some direction to the dark ambient light. For this photo, though, I just turned all the lights off to capture Jennifer and Aaron being adorably in love.

Madison wedding dramatic portrait {favorites}

I love shooting weddings in my hometown of Madison, Wisconsin. I love it so much that I don’t charge for travel there, and I end up shooting there a lot. The downtown has amazing public spaces for taking wedding photos – the captiol, the memorial union, state street, and the university buildings all make for great spots.

One challenge to having so many landmark buildings, however, is that it can be easy to fall into a rut of where to take photos. I don’t ever want my clients to look over my work and see the same location but a different wedding party, so at every location I do different poses, different angles, different lighting, different parts of the space to give truly unique images.

That brings me to Nicole and Rob’s gorgeous wedding at Tripp Commons of the Memorial Union in Madison. We took some photos with the water, and around the union, but my favorite photo was this one at the back of the old armory building between two brick buttresses.  I have fun with the lighting, and they had fun with the kissing :)
