Photography of Basilica Wedding Ceremonies
The Basilica of St Mary is an architectural marvel of a building in downtown Minneapolis, and a spectacular place for a wedding ceremony. I’ve been honored to photograph several weddings here over the years!
Think About Using All The Space
The Basilica has gorgeous spaces all around, from the front steps to the back window and many small nooks around. Make sure that you bring in enough sense of space to see the architecture and structure of this gorgeous space.
Lighting inside the space
The Basilica is gorgeous, and also can be a daunting space for a novice photographer. The lighting inside is perfectly set up to illuminate the front altar, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to well-lit formal portraits inside.
As a photographer at the Basilica, I’ve often used a mix of lighting to get the right balance of architectural detail and clarity for people. When the weather is nice, photos outside can bring more options for portraits as well.
Following guidelines at the Basilica
For documenting the ceremony, the Basilica staff have guidelines for how photography can work to preserve the focus of the ceremony. Guidelines keep the focus on the sacredness of the ceremony in this space. This can limit where your photographer can stand for things like the processional and recessional, and even during the ceremony itself, so make sure you are familiar with the requirements.
