Chef Camp – MN editorial event photographer

Food in the upper Midwest is having a moment. A moment in which it is finding it’s own voice, celebrating its unique opportunities. For so many years, we’ve admired and tried to emulate the coasts, or Europe, or someplace other than where we are – home of fish and beer and northwoods. So it has been a total pleasure to document Chef Camp – a weekend long summer camp experience for adults who love to eat, preferably over a campfire. Last year’s Chef Camp featured a lot of great food, a custom built pizza oven, foraged mushrooms galore, night canoe…

Nyes Restaurant Minneapolis in memorium

Many years ago, I spend an evening in Nyes taking photos for a magazine piece that never came together. The closing of Nyes prompted me to find some of my favorites from this totally Minneapolis bar. I was never a regular at Nyes restaurant. Even when I moved to Minneapolis 10 years ago, it was a vestige of a former hey day. It was a place to take out-of-towers, so show them what a sing-along piano bar could be like, or what dining was like in the 60s. The perogies were great, the drinks were strong, and there were the…

Modern Scandi Dinner for Hearten Magazine

“Swim, until you can’t see landare you a man? Are you a bag of sand?”– Frightened Rabbit I don’t know any other way to do things than with my whole intention. That is how I jumped into wedding photography 10 years ago. So, when the opportunity came to be at the forefront of a new Magazine about the Upper Midwest, I knew that I had to go in full force or not contribute at all. To say it has been a busy fall would be an understatement, and the support of my husband and friends has allowed me to continue…

Boundary Waters Feast

When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love. -Marcus Aurelius In winter, I traveled to Ely for a feast in the boundary waters. An extravagant multi-course meal, referencing the history of the boundary waters as well as modern tradition, cooked by J.D. Fratzke of Strip Club Meat and Fish. Part celebration of the bounty that is the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area, part styled photoshoot, part campaign to save the Boundary Waters, it was easily one of the most spectacular gatherings I have been a…

Cinemagraphs – Peace Coffee in motion

Client: A series of cinemagraphs with Peace Coffee for Heavy Table. Details: I had to find movements which could be cyclical – so as to combine them into one repeating loop on location at Peace Coffee roastery & Peace Coffee cafe. Below are a series of cinemagraphs (short loops of images) and a selection of the frames that they are made from. Goals:  Create a series of images to combine into cinemagraphs. Depict elements of roasting and serving coffee and give visual access to parts of the process that are inaccessible to public.

Wedding fashion shoot in Wisconsin Cranberry Bog {something different}

I am so very excited about these photos! Growing up, my mom always bought a freezer full of fresh cranberries in the fall to eat all year round. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized how unique that was, but now it is as much a part of my childhood as fresh baked bread or the occasional microwaved dinner – fresh cranberries are like home. And it wasn’t until I moved back to the Midwest that I realized that Wisconsin makes the majority of all cranberries in the US. Do you hear that Massachussets?  Of course, the Cranberry marshes…
