Photographing people, documenting food, editorial coverage of events and businesses – they are all different sides of the same coin. That is to say, what I love is telling stories visually, working in engaging environments, finding the hidden spaces and quiet stories in unexpected places. Some days that is documenting a coffee roaster, or lighting an industrial cheese plant. There is a real inclination to re-brand the Northwoods as a new Portland – tall pines and rocky shores, hip t shirts and third wave coffee. And those things are true of Minnesota – our art and fashion culture, our food and music, are engaging and vibrant. But, we must also embrace that which makes us a little dorky – a little offbeat and hard to classify. That combination is what defines us as a region. I documented the Ain Dah Yung Center‘s Cherish the Children Pow Wow this spring. It is impossible to color the full feel of being there – the colors, energy, drums, dancing. But I tried to capture some moments that convey the feeling of being there, and some that show the playful modern nature of this Children’s Pow Wow.
