Couples choose the JJ Hill Library for their wedding because it is truly one of the most amazing architectural spaces in the Twin Cities. The allure of a library wedding, surrounded by books, is also a draw for some. And being situated in the heart of St Paul, right on Rice Park, makes this a knockout place to show off St Paul to your guests.
Below are some of my favorite images from weddings at the JJ Hill Library, as well as some ideas for wedding venues that are similar to the JJ Hill library while it is undergoing changes. In 2019, the library was closed to the public but has recently reopened as the Avalon.
The Interior of James J Hill Library
The interior is truly why people love this St Paul landmark. The multi-story column-lined reception room is lined to the ceiling with bookshelves. This is a truly timeless feel for a location. It is elegant without effort.

Alternatives to JJ Hill Library
Now that the JJ Hill Library is reopened as the Avalon, it is offering wedding spaces and events again.
While nothing has all the features of this space, here are some recommendations for other spaces in Minneapolis and St Paul that have some of the visual appeal of the James J Hill Library.

The Landmark Center. Also on Rice Park in St Paul, this was built at a similar time and also has a gorgeous reception hall and architectural interest.

Lumber Exchange. In downtown Minneapolis, this former exchange building has been renovated into a lovely space with original brickwork.

Nicollet Island Pavilion. Along the Mississippi in Minneapolis, this older space has original brick and iron work.

Machine Shop. One of Minneapolis’s most sought after wedding event venues, this has a more modern take on historic venues.

Minneapolis Club. A classic club space in downtown Minneapolis brings elegance and tradition.

Renaissance Depot. This converted train station turned hotel sits in downtown Minneapolis.
