Your kids won’t see the images on your hard drive, and other tips for displaying and preserving your fave images.
Most of my photos of my kids are on my iPhone.
And most of those images just live on my hard drive.
And . . . I’m OK with that.
But, not *all* of my images are on my hard drive: I also love to interact with images in real life.
When I choose images to put up on my walls, or even by fridge, I’m thinking about the memories I’m share with guests and kids. We talk more about our honeymoon in Spain because I have a giant canvas prints of it. The kids ask about their grandparents, and remember trips, because we have those photos on our walls.
You know what they never ask about?
My hard drive of images.
Print the things that are important to you and share them with your future
So, maybe you got married this year, or took a trip, or included a new family member in your life. Print those memories and share them!
I recommend starting by answering the most important question:
Should these images last forever, or is a few years enough?
Some images are for enjoying now – magnets on the fridge from my phone, small photo books that show specific trips or life events, photos of friends for my kids to hold and play with.
Photo books and other press printed products like cards are often cheaper, and eventually the colors will fade and the pages will become brittle.
That is totally fine – travel photos aren’t something we want to page through forever, and I definitely don’t want my kids to have to find space for our sangria pics on their future book shelves!
However, and this is a big caveat – I don’t think you should use a press printed stuff for any photos that you want to last.
I want some images to last forever – a framed print of our family laughing together, a huge canvas photographic print from our favorite place in Spain, an album of our wedding photos.
Photographic prints and photo albums are meant to outlast you. A true photographic print or photographic Album with high quality products will last for over 100 years.
FUN PHOTO BOOKS AND PRODUCTS TO SHOWCASE YOUR IMAGES
Here are a few of my favorites at the moment that I use, some for enjoying now and some for enjoying forever!
(I’ve marked the two items I offer with an asterisk * – they are rated to last for 100 years and I’d love to put something together for you!)
PHOTOS TO GROW WITH YOU *
Wooden Image Box
100 prints in a custom wooden box. This is perfect for sharing photos from a wedding, or multiple portrait sessions. Flexible enough that you can update images from your life while keeping them protected.
PHOTOS TO SEE EVERY DAY :
This is perfect for all those fun, causal moments that you want to see when you grab milk. I like to add a new set to the fridge every year or so – sometimes they get lost, and that is ok, too.
PHOTOS WHEN YOU GATHER:
Again – total dork here! I love puzzles, but I’ve been totally spoiled for all puzzles since I got my first Liberty Puzzle a decade ago. They are laser cut from wood, and feature adorable novelty pieces, and you can have custom puzzles made with your photographs. I love making puzzles of my family – we can look closely at people’s faces and chat while we all put them back together, and it makes your photographs truly interactive.
PHOTO ALBUMS FOR LITTLE HANDS
Family & Friends album from Amazon
I looked around a lot for a soft cover photo album that my kids could play with – it doesn’t have labels for family members (which is great – who’s family fits into a set of labels?) and you can easily add photos as needed!
PHOTOS TO LAST FOREVER *
Small Flush Mount Photo Album
Printing photos and having them with you is part of remembering and sharing our memories. A quality album will ensure that your photos last for future generations, so that they can see how much fun you had. That is why I only offer Flush Mount style albums – the images are developed and printed deep into the paper to give these albums a long life.
