I’ve loved the Varsity theater for many many years. Its a gorgeous, quirky location that had no end of nooks for interesting photo angles. But I have also found that couples who choose the Varsity bring their own sense of style and excitement to the planning. It was a total pleasure to document Elizabeth and Matt and the fun people who celebrated with them.

I’m not from Minneapolis, but I’ve lived here long enough to love it and want it showcased at its best. I think that is something that I definitely have in common with Tom and Margaux. Regardless, they couldn’t have chosen better locations for their guests to experience Minneapolis. Their wedding at Lady of Lordes church (the oldest church in the city) overlooked the downtown and Mississippi river on a the perfect early fall day. We stopped by Nye’s Polonaise (a classic Minneapolis piano bar) for a drink and some vintage gold booths before heading over for a reception at a…
Shooting frequently in the same places can either be a challenge or a repetition. I feel so lucky to have clients who get married at the Loring Pasta Bar and Varsity Theater– no matter how often I shoot there, there is always a new angle to find and bring a different perspective. I love the dark moody-ness and the wacky eccentricities of the space, and the combination of vintage and post-apocalyptic warehouse. Sometimes you find the southern charm, sometimes the french noir, sometimes the modern color, but always something new. And so for Jess and Luke, the Loring and Varsity was all vintage charm –…
Shannon + Sean put effort into the little things that mattered to them (like Sean’s amazing ring made from Elk horn, or Shannon’s blue gloves), and then they let the rest of the day unfold as it would, from a little snow to a lot of laughter and some great food. What a perfect way to warm up a Minneapolis winter! Hotel: Aloft Ceremony: Loring Pasta Bar Reception: Varsity Theater Floral: Martha’s Gardens
“For the rest of our days” is the question that Mike asked Jessica when they got engaged, and the promise they made to each other at their wedding. I couldn’t be happier that I was able to be there as they began a new chapter of days together! ABOUT WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY AT THE VARSITY I’ve photographed many weddings at the Loring restaurant and Varsity Theater. They are two well matched spaces that each have enough character to make an entire celebration. Couples often ask me what spaces will work in the Varsity for photography? There are honestly almost infinite possibilities…
If you are planning a wedding, take a note from Molly & Andy’s: get the right people involved, find the things that are important to you, and then just let it happen. I admire how they can stay in the moment – from the hilarious faces they make to their utter respect and love for each other. Nice job, you two, in finding each other and then planning a great celebration.
