Engagement Photo Hack: Play in a different season You’ve probably heard suggestions for times of day that are best for photos – the “golden hour” before sunset, avoiding glaring mid-day sun. Those are often good guidelines, but my favorite engagement photo hack is to choose a season for your photos. Spring with the bright colors, summer with long dusk, autumn with changing colors, and winter with the stark trees and bright clean aesthetics of snowy days. You probably chose your wedding date based on many factors – the availability of the venue, the schedules of your family, the weather that worked with your vision.…

On Minnesota State Fair engagement photos and man’s quest for meaning Here’s what I will say about the Minnesota State Fair: at this ridiculous, crowded, farm-animal filled, hot-dish-on-a-stick gathering, I see mankind’s quest for meaning. I love pouring over the seed art – tiny dots of alfalfa and canola seeds, placed one at a time into a portrait of Prince; thousands of ears of corn, hand selected based on criteria I don’t understand. One year there was a ballgown knit of grey yarn and covered in sock monkeys, as though they wanted to escape the dress and join the party. Row…
A fear of heights and Ferris wheel engagement photos So, planning engagement photos makes some people anxious. I totally understand, most adults have not have had formal portraits taken since high school or maybe for a work ID. Even if those were pretty good experiences, they were probably not meaningful and fun. So I like to assure couples thinking about engagement photos that taking photos with your sweetie can be fun: it can be as enjoyable and easy as a nice walk, or a quick bite. Sure, I will be there, but I’ll handle my end of the conversation just…
When I first moved to Minneapolis (after living in Boston for several years), I remember a radio piece about honking your horn while driving. The test was to see how quickly people in various US cities would honk their car horns at a car that didn’t move when the light turned green. In Boston, honking started basically as soon as the light turned green. In Minneapolis, the average time was over a minute. And that seems about right. The midwest has an earnestness that sometimes seems like naivete, and I’m always curious to see how the Minneapolis vibe translates to others. Generally, I’d like to…
I often end up at similar places in Minneapolis for engagement photos, and yet the images I take are so influenced by the people in them that I’m never tired of walking the same steps. Katrina and Andy couldn’t have chosen a better late summer evening – warm billowy dusk into cool, blue skies for some night portraits.
I like you guys. I like your polka dot Northeast Minneapolis vibe, I like your quiet moments together, I like your taste in food, and I like that you found each other.
Summer light, WPA-era stonework, and Michael’s frozen custard – all topped up by a great time with Cate & Eric. I am so excited for their Madison wedding next year
Molly and Andy took a big leap to have a themed engagement session – they wanted something with a 60s feel, inspired by the album covers of Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings – and it takes a lot of effort to pull that off! I was so impressed that they really committed to the theme – Andy got a new suit, Molly broke out that fabulous dress and matching clutch, and I coordinated the locations. The best part about this engagement session is that, even though it has a specific style to it, Molly and Andy really make it…
