I’ve been excited to show the images from Alex and Jill’s WA Frost Intimate Winter Wedding. I’ve also been slowed down by the winter blues.
“Neither need you tell me,” said Candide, “that we must take care of our garden.”
Winter is a time of contemplation for me. I’m too distracted in the heat of summer, the crush of weddings, the joy of warm days, to spend much time in quiet reflection. But in winter, and especially this post-election winter, I find myself reflecting on my place in the greater world. I know, as a wedding photographer, that in many ways my influence is small; in a world sense, my work is small.
I never made it the whole way through Candide (I suppose some people have head more than a synopsis), but Voltaire famously said we must tend to our own garden – “it is the only way to render life supportable”
So when I think of Alex and Jill’s intimate winter wedding at WA Frost, I think of how important it felt to be there. I think of how vital to living and surviving and thriving are our celebrations, our community, our work. Perhaps the most important things are small, are deliberate, are one person to another.
Which is not to say that wedding photography is important, it is to say that I hope it is a document of the important things in life.
Thank you to Alex and Jill, who have paid me the greatest compliment in the depths of winter with their kind testimonial about working with me as their wedding photographer:
“You made our wedding last so much longer than the day itself because we have these stunning images to remind us of the way we felt that day.”
